Divine tests in the Quran serve to distinguish true believers from claimants, purify and refine the soul, elevate spiritual ranks, and awaken individuals from heedlessness. These trials, whether in the form of hardship or blessing, are opportunities for growth, self-discovery, and drawing closer to God.
Life in this world is a vast arena for the growth and flourishing of the human soul, and a stage for the manifestation of truths. Almighty God, the Creator of existence and the absolute Knower of all secrets, in His infinite grace and wisdom, has drawn a path for His servants through which they can attain perfection and experience divine proximity. In this path, divine tests and trials play a very central and decisive role. These tests are not due to God’s lack of knowledge – for He is aware of everything and needs no testing – but their purpose is to educate, purify, distinguish, and elevate human beings. The Holy Quran clearly emphasizes that our life is entirely a trial; a trial where every moment can be an opportunity to discover hidden capacities, strengthen faith, and draw closer to the Creator. Below, we will elaborate on the various purposes of these tests from the perspective of the Holy Quran. One of the primary purposes of divine tests is to 'distinguish and differentiate' true believers from false claimants and hypocrites. God states in the Quran: ﴿أَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوا أَن يَقُولُوا آمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ * وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۖ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكَاذِبِينَ﴾ (Surah Al-Ankabut, Verses 2-3); meaning, 'Do people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried? But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.' These verses clearly indicate that faith is not merely a claim but requires practical proof. It is amidst hardships, fears, hunger, and financial and physical losses that the sincerity, steadfastness, and true adherence of individuals to their faith become apparent. Those whose faith is weak will falter in the face of difficulties, while true believers will remain steadfast in their faith with patience and perseverance. This distinction is not for God’s knowledge, but for the clarification of truths in the real world and for the benefit of human beings themselves and society. Another purpose of these tests is the 'purification of the soul and refinement of character'. Calamities and difficulties act like a furnace that separates impurities from human existence. Every tribulation and hardship is an opportunity for self-building and reaching a higher level of piety and sincerity. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155, we read: ﴿وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ﴾; 'And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.' This verse indicates that tests are a way to foster patience and gratitude in human beings. A person who practices patience in the face of hardships and is grateful for blessings will gradually have their heart enlightened and their will strengthened. This purification provides the ground for a deeper understanding of the meaning of life, the purpose of creation, and absolute dependence on God. Pains and sufferings, when viewed with a divine perspective, can awaken humans from heedlessness and guide them towards self-knowledge and knowledge of God. Furthermore, divine tests occur for the purpose of 'elevating rank and increasing reward'. Just as a student advances to higher academic levels by successfully passing difficult exams, a believer, by succeeding in divine trials, attains higher ranks with Almighty God. These tribulations and challenges also serve as expiation for past sins and are a way to erase evil deeds and increase good ones. Every act of patience and resistance in the way of God brings immense good deeds and rewards that cannot be attained in normal life. These rewards manifest both in this world as peace and blessings, and in the hereafter as high ranks in Paradise. The Merciful God does not leave any deed unrewarded, and the greater the difficulty of the trial, the greater its reward will be. Additionally, tests sometimes act as a 'reminder and awakening'. In daily life, sometimes humans become heedless and deviate from the path of servitude. Divine tests act like a gentle nudge to make humans aware of their weaknesses and their dependence on God. When all paths are closed and no helper remains but God, humans inevitably return to their Creator and realize their true need for Him. This awakening is an opportunity for repentance and return to the correct path, and it can be the beginning of a profound transformation in an individual's life. It should be noted that divine tests are not limited to calamities and hardships. Rather, 'blessings and comfort' are also a form of test. God says in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 7: ﴿إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا﴾; 'Indeed, We have made that which is on earth an adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.' This verse clearly shows that the beauties of the world, wealth, power, health, and all the blessings bestowed upon us, are all means by which we are tested. Do we use these blessings for good and in a way that pleases God, or do we become arrogant and rebellious? Are we grateful or ungrateful? How we use these blessings indicates the extent of our faith and piety. Finally, the purpose of divine tests is the 'manifestation of divine wisdom and justice'. God is Just and Wise and never commits injustice. Tests show how different individuals react to varying conditions, and consequently, each person's reward and retribution will be based on their own deeds and choices. These tests prepare humans to understand their responsibility for their actions and prepare them for eternal life in the hereafter. Thus, every test, whether in the form of hardship or comfort, is an invitation to reflection, self-improvement, patience, gratitude, and a return to Almighty God. With this perspective, every challenge in life transforms into an opportunity for growth and closeness to God, making one's faith deeper and life more meaningful.
Do people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?
But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
Indeed, We have made that which is on earth an adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.
In ancient times, there lived a renowned merchant named Kareem, who possessed great wealth and a kind heart. One day, fortune turned against him; his ships sank in a storm, and all his assets were lost. His friends chided him for not being cautious, but Kareem calmly and with reliance on God replied, "Do not grieve, for God is the All-Knowing, and there is wisdom in everything that happens. Perhaps this tribulation is to test my patience and gratitude." With reliance on God and renewed effort, he started afresh. After some time, by divine blessing, his situation became even better than before. Kareem never forgot the bitterness of those days and always used to say, "Divine tests transform bitter experiences into sweetness and bring one closer to oneself and to God, just as Saadi said: 'Step with patience and serenity on this path, for patience brings hidden openings.'"
