Even in the midst of extreme difficulties, relying on God brings peace and strength because He is All-Knowing, All-Powerful, and Sufficient. This trust involves making efforts and then entrusting the outcome to divine wisdom.
When life's challenges overwhelm us, when difficulties seem to block every path, and we feel trapped in a dead end, the question might naturally arise: Why should I rely on God when everything has become so difficult? This is a perfectly human and understandable query, as in the throes of adversity, the future often becomes blurred, and hearts pound with anxiety. However, in the teachings of the Holy Quran, reliance on God, or *Tawakkul*, is not merely an ethical recommendation but a steadfast pillar for peace, perseverance, and success in life, especially during arduous times. The Quran repeatedly calls believers to *Tawakkul*, presenting this principle not just as a way out of problems, but as the very foundation of a monotheistic worldview and understanding of existence. The first and most paramount reason to place our trust in God is the comprehension of His infinite greatness and power. Allah, the Exalted, is the Creator of the heavens and the earth; He is All-Knowing and All-Capable. While human knowledge and abilities are inherently limited, God encompasses all things, and nothing is hidden from His knowledge. When we put our trust in God, we are essentially entrusting our affairs to One who is superior to every problem, who knows the solution to every predicament, and who possesses boundless power to execute His will. This understanding inherently bestows a profound tranquility upon the heart, for we realize that we are under the protection of an eternal power, free from any deficiency or inability. In Surah At-Talaq, verse 3, Allah states: "And whoever relies upon Allah – He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent." This verse testifies that one who relies on God will never be left wanting, and God will suffice for their affairs. Another compelling reason for *Tawakkul* is the attainment of inner peace and freedom from anxiety. Humanity is inherently prone to worrying about the future and the consequences of actions, particularly when faced with hardships. *Tawakkul* alleviates this heavy burden of worry from the individual. It is crucial to understand that *Tawakkul* does not imply abandoning effort or struggle; rather, it means that after exerting one's utmost effort and wisdom, the ultimate outcome is entrusted to the Almighty. This perspective helps us avoid falling into the trap of despair and hopelessness. When we know that even in the most challenging circumstances, we have divine support, our hearts find solace, and our minds are saved from turmoil. This tranquility strengthens our decision-making ability and resolve to continue our journey. The Quran, in Surah Hud, verse 123, proclaims: "And to Allah belongs the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth and to Him will be returned the matter, all of it. So worship Him and rely upon Him. And your Lord is not unaware of that which you do." This verse not only emphasizes complete submission to the divine will but also assures us that God is not heedless of any of our actions and is always present and watchful. *Tawakkul* also aids us in transforming our perspective on difficulties. From a monotheistic viewpoint, problems are not merely misfortunes but can be opportunities for growth, tests of faith, and strengthening of the spirit. God states in the Quran that indeed, with hardship comes ease (Surah Al-Inshirah, verses 5-6). This signifies that even at the peak of adversity, avenues of divine mercy and relief will open. *Tawakkul* makes us more patient and teaches us to believe in the wisdom behind events. What might appear catastrophic to us today could, in the near or distant future, transform into a great good of which we were unaware. This outlook transcends human limitations and apparent realities, connecting us to broader horizons of hope and divine grace. In Surah Al-Imran, verse 160, the Quran declares: "If Allah should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allah let the believers rely." This verse portrays the ultimate power and sufficiency of God, stating that true help comes only from Him, and He alone is worthy of complete trust and reliance. Beyond its spiritual and psychological benefits, *Tawakkul* also has practical implications. An individual who relies on God takes steps with greater courage, as the fear of failure or undesirable outcomes dissipates. They know they have done their best and have entrusted the rest to God. This mindset allows them to exhibit greater creativity and discover novel solutions to problems. Many stories of prophets and righteous individuals in the Quran are brilliant examples of practical *Tawakkul*; they faced formidable enemies, famine, illness, and other calamities, yet instead of despairing, they experienced divine miracles through reliance on God and persistent effort. Therefore, *Tawakkul* is not a passive concept but an active catalyst for movement, endeavor, and hope. This heartfelt trust that God is the best disposer of affairs imbues us with an inner strength that transcends our apparent capabilities, enabling us to stand firm and endure through adversities and emerge victorious. This is how *Tawakkul*, in the most difficult circumstances, is not merely justified but becomes the most essential spiritual and psychological need for a human being, paving the way for divine opening and grace.
And whoever relies upon Allah – He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
And to Allah belongs the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth and to Him will be returned the matter, all of it. So worship Him and rely upon Him. And your Lord is not unaware of that which you do.
If Allah should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allah let the believers rely.
It is narrated that there was once a merchant who lost his entire fortune during a sea voyage and fell into extreme poverty. His friends abandoned him, and difficulties besieged him from all sides. In that state of despair, one night he ventured into the desert, raised his head to the sky, and with all his heart, said: "My Lord! You know that I have no refuge but You, and I am cut off from all worldly means. You alone know how to manage my affairs, for Your servant has no one but You." That night, he slept with a peaceful heart, and in the morning, a voice whispered in his heart: "Arise and go towards the city." He rose and went. On his way, he found a treasure belonging to the king that had been lost. He honestly brought it to the palace. The king rejoiced at his trustworthiness and, in addition to a reward, made him a trusted minister. The merchant understood that relying on God in the midst of extreme difficulties opens doors of mercy and ease that no human calculation can fathom. He would always say: "Whoever relies on God, God is his advocate."
