Attention to intention is the foundation of human actions, and a pure intention aids in the acceptance of deeds.
In the Holy Quran, paying attention to intention is highlighted as a fundamental principle in human actions. Intention acts as the driving force that elevates an act to its true significance. Allah states, 'And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion' (Surah Al-Bayyina, 5). This verse indicates that only sincere acts performed with a correct intention will bear fruit. Additionally, in Surah Al-Ikhlas, Allah emphasizes the concept of monotheism, which is a reminder of pure intention. Intention reflects the underlying purpose behind our deeds; are we praying for God's satisfaction or for the approval of others? A pure intention leads to closeness to God and the acceptance of our acts. For instance, someone who gives charity but does it to show off to others will not receive true rewards, as their intention is not sincere. Thus, one reason why attention to intention is essential is that it affects both the quality and acceptance of the act. Prophetic traditions also reiterate that 'Actions are judged by intentions.' This message should not only be considered in worship but also in all daily behavior. Therefore, being mindful of our intentions is the key to the success and acceptance of actions both in this life and the Hereafter.
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion.
