Is God aware of human tears?

The Quran introduces God as an absolutely All-Knowing, All-Aware, All-Seeing, and All-Hearing Being from whom nothing, whether manifest or hidden, remains concealed. Tears, whether they stem from grief and pain, humility and divine awe, repentance and remorse, or even from joy and ecstasy, are a profound expression of deep human emotions and inner states. If God is aware of every falling leaf and every seed hidden in the darkness of the earth, and if He knows the secrets of hearts and inner whispers, how could He possibly be unaware of such a profound human phenomenon as tears? The Holy Quran emphasizes the vastness of divine knowledge in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-An'am (The Cattle), verse 59, it states: "And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it; nor a grain in the darkness of the earth or anything fresh or dry but that it is in a clear record." This verse illustrates that God's knowledge encompasses even the minutest details of existence. If the falling of a leaf or the presence of a tiny grain is not hidden from His sight, how could a teardrop, which emanates from the depths of the soul, be outside the realm of His knowledge? Tears are an external manifestation of internal feelings, and since God knows what transpires in the chests and hearts, He is certainly fully aware of their external expression. In Surah Qaf, verse 16, God declares: "And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein." This boundless proximity to humanity signifies absolute awareness of all human conditions, thoughts, and emotions. If God is closer to us than our jugular vein, how can He be unaware of a tear that falls from our eye or the pain that causes that tear to flow? This verse paints a picture of God's constant presence and infinite awareness of His servants. This closeness assures us that in moments of solitude and isolation, even when no one else witnesses our sorrow or joy, God is always observing and aware. This divine awareness offers immense comfort, for it means our deepest personal experiences are known and understood by the Creator. Furthermore, the Quran frequently refers to God with the attributes of "Al-Sami'" (The All-Hearing) and "Al-Basir" (The All-Seeing). God hears not only manifest words but also hidden whispers and silent prayers. A tear, at times, is like a silent prayer; an expression of unspoken words and pains that cannot be articulated. When a person, in the depths of despair or pain, sheds a tear, this tear is in itself a cry for help or an acknowledgment of weakness before divine power. "Is not He (better than your gods) who responds to the distressed when he calls upon Him?" (An-Naml, 62). This response necessitates a complete awareness of the distressed person's condition, including their tears. His attributes of Al-Sami' and Al-Basir imply that every sound, every sight, no matter how small or private, is within His comprehensive knowledge. In the Quranic and Islamic tradition, tears hold multiple meanings and values. Tears of repentance are a sign of a servant's return to God, signifying humility and remorse. Tears of humility and fear of God are marks of piety and deep spiritual insight. Tears born of calamity and pain indicate human weakness and need for divine support. In all these states, God is observing and aware. This divine awareness is not merely about knowing; it also encompasses presence, attention, and divine management. Knowing that God is aware of our tears brings immense peace of mind and hope to humanity. One realizes that even in the deepest moments of loneliness and sorrow, they are not alone, and an All-Knowing, Merciful Lord is watching over them and is aware of their suffering. This divine awareness itself is an enormous source of solace and strength, as it assures the servant that no pain is in vain and no tear is unaccounted for; all are recorded and known in His presence. This understanding not only lightens the burden of sorrow but also motivates perseverance in the path of faith and reliance on God. Ultimately, the knowledge that our Creator is aware of even a single tear falling from our eyes deepens our connection with Him and strengthens our faith and reliance. He who is aware of everything is certainly fully informed of the pain and suffering, or joy and humility, that causes our tears to flow.
