Quranic Answer

Can the feeling of loneliness bring me closer to God?

The feeling of loneliness, at first glance, might seem like a painful and undesirable experience. It can lead us towards isolation and sadness. However, from a Quranic and spiritual perspective, loneliness can actually be a unique opportunity, even a divine gift, that guides us towards a deeper and more meaningful connection with God. The Holy Quran repeatedly emphasizes God's perpetual presence and closeness to humanity, reminding us that a human being is never truly alone, even at the peak of their feeling of isolation. Loneliness can, in fact, serve as a gateway to introspection and contemplation. In the hustle and bustle of daily life and various interactions, we often don't get the chance to be alone with ourselves and delve into the depths of our being. But when the feeling of loneliness arises, it provides an opportunity to distance ourselves from external distractions and listen to our inner voice. This inner voice often guides us towards the origin of existence, the Almighty God. It is in such moments that a person realizes their weakness and dependence on God's power and self-sufficiency more than ever before, and this very understanding marks the beginning of closeness to Him. The Quran introduces God as the closest friend and refuge. In Surah Qaf, verse 16, it states: “And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.” This verse clearly demonstrates how close God is to us and that He is never unaware of our condition. Even in the deepest loneliness, He is always hearing, seeing, and present. This understanding can not only reduce the feeling of loneliness but also transform it into a blessed solitude with God. One of the most important ways to transform loneliness into divine proximity is to turn to worship and remembrance (dhikr). When we feel lonely, instead of getting lost in negative thoughts, we can hasten towards prayer (Salat). Prayer is a direct and immediate link to God. In every bowing and prostration, we physically and spiritually draw closer to Him. Supplication (Du'a), opening one's heart and speaking to God as if talking to our most intimate friend, can be soothing and comforting. Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 186, says: “And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be guided.” This verse is an explicit invitation to pray and hope for acceptance, providing immense refuge in moments of loneliness. Furthermore, the remembrance of God (whether verbally or in the heart) plays a vital role in overcoming loneliness. The Quran in Surah Ar-Ra'd, verse 28, states: “Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” This verse is a healing prescription for restless hearts. When the heart is filled with the remembrance of God, there is no room left for loneliness. Reading the Quran and reflecting on its verses can also bring a deep sense of companionship and tranquility. God's words are a light that illuminates the darkness of the heart and strengthen the feeling of unity with the Creator of existence. Understanding that God's word is a guide to life and an endless source of peace transforms loneliness into a blessed solitude for understanding and connection. From a spiritual psychological perspective, loneliness can be a powerful catalyst for seeking the meaning of life. When one feels a void due to external attachments and relationships dependent on others, they are compelled to search for a deeper and more lasting meaning. This search often leads to God, as He is the only source of absolute meaning and permanence. On this path, an individual learns that true happiness and peace lie not in dependence on others, but in dependence on God and His pleasure. This shift in perspective not only transforms loneliness from a heavy burden into a path of growth but also helps the individual establish healthier relationships with others, as they no longer feel an urgent need to fill their inner voids with others, but rather interact from a place of inner richness. Therefore, it can be said that the feeling of loneliness, although seemingly unpleasant, can be one of the most powerful tools to guide a person towards God. This feeling is an opportunity to pull back the curtains, look deep into our being, and there, feel the loving and perpetual presence of God. By turning to supplication, remembrance, prayer, and contemplation of the Quran, one can transform this loneliness into a constructive and spiritual solitude, the fruit of which is profound peace and boundless closeness to the Most Merciful Lord. This solitude, not out of compulsion but out of love and free will, leads us to the divine safe haven and reminds us that God is our best and eternal companion and intimate friend.

Short Story

They say that in ancient times, a dervish lived in a remote mountain. One day, a man came to visit him and asked: 'O Sheikh, do you not feel lonely in this solitude and distance from people?' The dervish smiled and replied: 'O friend, how can I be alone when the Lord of this mountain and the Creator of existence is always with me? Every pebble utters His praise, and every breeze tells of His presence. Loneliness is when one forgets Him, not when one is far from people. How many are there among crowds whose hearts are far from God, and how many recluses who have found intimacy with Him and have never tasted loneliness.' And the man took heed from this saying and found his way, realizing that the presence of the Truth is the best companion.
