Does envy take away blessings?

Envy not only causes internal torment but also takes away blessings from one’s life.

Quranic Answer

In the Holy Quran, envy and its consequences are clearly expressed. Envy is regarded as a despised trait that not only negatively affects human relationships but also impacts one's individual and social life. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 109, Allah tells the believers that some people become envious of the blessings given to others, particularly towards the believers themselves. This envy can lead to a loss of blessings in an individual's life and in the community because instead of focusing on one’s own blessings, the person is consumed by envy towards what others possess. For instance, in Surah Aal-Imran, verse 120, we read: "If good reaches you, it distresses them; but if harm strikes you, they rejoice at it." This verse shows how negative attitudes like envy can harm a person’s heart and take away blessings from their life. Ultimately, envy leads not only to inner torment but also distances one from God's mercy and blessings. Thus, to have a life filled with blessings and happiness, it is essential to distance ourselves from envy and focus on fostering love and friendship among ourselves.

Short Story

Once upon a time, Spring and Summer were having a debate. Spring proudly said, "I bring flowers to the world and make everyone happy!" Summer, in jealousy, responded, "Yes, but I bring warmth and light; without me, no one can enjoy the flowers." Just then, a wise old man approached them and said, "Dear friends, why do you envy each other? The blessing of each of you lies in your collaboration. Each of you, in turn, brings beauty and blessing. Let go of envy and share joy together."
