A bright heart is achieved through the remembrance of God, contemplation of the Quran, piety and avoidance of sin, repentance, and good deeds. This continuous path purifies the heart from darkness and illuminates it with divine light.
Having a bright and luminous heart is the aspiration of every human being who seeks tranquility, insight, and closeness to truth. In the Quranic perspective, the heart is not merely a physical organ, but rather the center of perception, emotions, and the seat of faith and piety. A bright heart is one that has been purified from the dust of sins, worldly contaminations, and moral vices, and illuminated with the light of divine knowledge and faith. The Holy Quran offers numerous strategies for achieving this inner brightness, all revolving around a deep and stable connection with Allah Almighty. One of the most fundamental and crucial ways to brighten the heart is through the 'constant remembrance of Allah (Dhikr).' Allah Almighty says in Surah Ar-Ra'd, verse 28: "الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ" (Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.) This noble verse explicitly states that true tranquility and inner luminosity are attained only through the remembrance of Allah. Dhikr is not merely the repetition of specific words; rather, it is the constant presence of Allah in one's thoughts, words, and actions. When the heart becomes accustomed to the remembrance of God, there remains no room for anxieties, worries, and the darkness arising from worldly attachments. The light of divine knowledge illuminates the hidden corners of the heart and creates a profound insight within a person, enabling them to distinguish truth from falsehood and the path of righteousness from the way of corruption. Continuance in Dhikr is like the continuous irrigation of a seedling that transforms it into a fruitful tree; Dhikr also revives the heart from its withered and dry state, filling it with spiritual freshness and vitality. With each remembrance, a layer of heedlessness is removed from the mirror of the heart, increasing its capacity to reflect divine lights. The second and very important method is 'recitation and contemplation of the Holy Quran.' The Quran itself is 'light' and 'healing.' (O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.) Reciting the Quran with attention and contemplation causes the divine word to descend directly upon the heart, cleansing it of rust and impurities. Understanding its verses and acting upon its commands awaken the heart, grant insight, and reveal the path of guidance. The Holy Quran is a complete manual for a blissful life and a bright heart. The more we engage with this heavenly book and implement its messages in our lives, the more our heart's luminosity increases. Contemplation of the verses encourages reflection and distances one from heedlessness and superficiality, thereby preparing the heart to receive deeper truths. This contemplation is like a light that shines into the depths of one's being, dispelling all darkness and ignorance. 'Taqwa (piety and God-consciousness)' also plays a pivotal role in enlightening the heart. Taqwa means guarding oneself against sins and avoiding divine prohibitions. (Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has descended of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them were defiantly disobedient.) This verse warns that prolonged heedlessness and committing sins lead to hardness and darkness of the heart. Avoiding sins, especially major ones and injustices against others (Huquq al-Nas), keeps the mirror of the heart clear and prepares it to reflect divine light. Taqwa grants a person insight to discern the right path amidst trials and doubts, and to avoid falling into the traps of carnal and jinn devils. This continuous vigilance gradually purifies the heart from all impurities and transforms it into a spring of wisdom and spirituality. 'Repentance (Tawbah) and seeking forgiveness (Istighfar)' are also effective factors in polishing the heart. Sins settle upon the heart like rust, making it dark and dull. The only way to cleanse this rust is to turn to Allah's doorstep and seek His forgiveness. Every time a person repents from a sin, a new light shines upon their heart, and hope and renewed life flow within it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The heart of a believer gets rusty, just as iron gets rusty, and its polish is seeking forgiveness." This noble Hadith clearly demonstrates the importance of Istighfar in the purity and brightness of the heart. Sincere repentance not only erases sins but also increases the heart's capacity to receive divine lights and the merciful manifestations of Allah. This continuous process of repentance and turning back to Allah keeps the heart on the path of spiritual growth and development, always dynamic and moving. Finally, 'performing righteous deeds and showing kindness to creation' also plays a significant role in enlightening the heart. Serving people, helping the needy, practicing justice, and avoiding oppression soften and purify the heart. Allah Almighty says in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 77: "وَأَحْسِن كَمَا أَحْسَنَ اللَّهُ إِلَيْكَ" (And do good as Allah has done good to you.) When a person does good to others with a pure intention, the reflection of this goodness appears in their heart, filling it with light and tranquility. Love for others, forgiveness, forbearance, and avoidance of malice and envy free the heart from darkness and prepare it to receive divine light. In summary, to have a bright heart, one must continuously strive on the path of sincere servitude, remembrance of God, companionship with the Quran, avoidance of sin, repentance, and service to creation. This path is a continuous and blessed journey, the result of which will be a heart full of divine light, peace, and insight.
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.
O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.
Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has descended of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them were defiantly disobedient.
Once upon a time, there was a wealthy king who possessed immense riches and lived in a magnificent palace. Despite all his grandeur, his heart was perpetually troubled and sorrowful, finding no peace in life. One day, he confided in a great sage of his time, saying, "O wise sage, with all this glory and power, why does my heart not find release from distress?" The sage smiled and replied, "O King, the heart is like a mirror that is clouded by the dust of the world and sins. Wealth and power do not remove this dust; rather, they sometimes add to it. If you wish for your heart to be bright and find tranquility, you must cleanse it with the water of divine remembrance and polish it with the light of service to creation. Abstain from injustice and be kind to the needy, for a heart that is not merciful to God's servants will never see peace and light." The king took heed of this advice, changed his ways, and instead of accumulating more treasures, he devoted himself to purifying his soul and attending to the needs of his people. Gradually, the light of divine peace and insight began to manifest in his heart, and he truly found a bright and radiant heart.
