To stay away from backbiting, we must be aware that such behavior harms others and also observe God’s piety.
In the Holy Quran, backbiting and slander are severely condemned, with many verses addressing this topic. One important aspect of staying away from backbiting is to maintain piety and consciousness of God. In Surah An-Noor, verse 19, Allah highlights that those who engage in slander will face painful punishment. To avoid backbiting and slander, the first step should be awareness of the consequences of such acts. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12, Allah advises believers against suspicion and commands them not to accuse one another of wrongdoing or criticize each other. These verses remind us that our tongues can be instruments of good or evil, and we must be mindful of them. Additionally, surrounding ourselves with righteous and good-hearted individuals is important, as well as constantly reminding ourselves that backbiting and slander are societal and moral ailments to be avoided. Strengthening empathy and understanding towards others can also help prevent backbiting. We can resolve not to judge others without full knowledge of their circumstances and refrain from spreading baseless rumors. This practice will not only benefit us individually but will also contribute positively to society as a whole.
Indeed, those who like to see immoral things spread among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows whatever you do.
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. And would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother while he is dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.
One day, a man was in the marketplace chatting with his friends when he suddenly began gossiping about an acquaintance. One of his friends said to him, 'Why are you doing this? Do you not know that backbiting is a great sin?' The man paused to think, realizing his friend was right. From then on, he tried to stay away from backbiting and made an effort to refrain from judging others’ lives.
