How Do I Know That God Has Guided Me?

Guidance is a divine gift that illuminates hearts and reveals the correct path in life. A person who is guided, instead of drowning in despair, seeks refuge in Allah and asks for His help, which in itself is a sign of being guided. This peace helps them make better decisions and stay away from worldly restlessness. Another sign is an inclination towards goodness and avoidance of evil. A guided individual is naturally drawn towards righteous deeds, truthfulness, trustworthiness, kindness to others, and upholding people’s rights. Conversely, they develop a sense of aversion and disgust towards sin, injustice, falsehood, and anything that goes against Allah’s pleasure. This innate inclination towards good and beauty within a human being is strengthened under divine guidance and transforms into a driving force for progress on the path of perfection. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes performing good deeds and avoiding evil, and this inclination is a reflection of that inner guidance. This inclination is not just internal but also manifests in action, where the individual strives to promote goodness and shun evil, even if it means sacrificing worldly gains. Ease in performing acts of worship and righteous deeds is also a clear manifestation of guidance. Prayer (Salat), fasting (Sawm), charity (Sadaqah), recitation of the Quran, and other acts of worship do not become a burden or a difficult obligation for the guided individual. Instead, they find joy in performing them and experience spiritual solace through them. It is as if an inner force propels them towards these acts, preparing their heart to accept and perform them. This does not mean they never feel tired or tempted, but rather that ultimately, the strength of faith and the desire for Allah overcome these obstacles and draw them towards devotion. In fact, for such an individual, acts of worship are not merely a means of connecting with God but also a source of rejuvenation and strengthening of their spirit. This state indicates that their soul and heart are in harmony with the divine path. A deeper understanding and comprehension of divine verses and Quranic knowledge is another sign. When a person is guided, the Quran is not merely a historical or literary book for them; it is a living, guiding word that speaks directly to their heart and intellect. They enjoy reciting the Quran, comprehend its meanings better, and make its teachings the guiding light of their life. Every verse opens a door for them to greater knowledge and deeper insight into existence and the purpose of creation. This understanding occurs not only on an intellectual level but also on a heartfelt level, such that the individual feels a greater connection and presence with each verse. This state helps them approach life’s issues with a divine perspective and escape confusion. Steadfastness in the face of temptations and difficulties is also an important sign of guidance. Worldly life is full of challenges, temptations, and trials. A guided individual shows greater resistance to these temptations and does not deviate from the path of truth. With reliance on Allah and seeking help through patience and prayer, they overcome difficulties and see every hardship as an opportunity for growth and greater proximity to Allah. The verse, “And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways” (Al-Ankabut: 69) perfectly illustrates that striving and struggling in the way of Allah is a prerequisite for receiving more divine guidance. This steadfastness is a sign of the strength of faith and firmness on the divine path, which is not possible without Allah’s help and guidance. Association with the righteous and avoidance of the corrupt is also a natural consequence of guidance. A guided individual instinctively gravitates towards the company of believing and righteous people and avoids associating with those who would lead them away from Allah’s path. One’s environment greatly influences them, and choosing righteous companions is itself a sign of an inclination towards guidance and moving on the divine path. This greatly aids their growth and stability on the path of truth. Finally, the ability to repent and return to Allah after making a mistake is a powerful sign of guidance. No human being is infallible, and everyone may make mistakes. However, a guided individual, after committing a sin, experiences deep regret and earnestly takes steps towards repentance and rectifying their error. This ability to repent and reform stems from Allah’s mercy and guidance, which grants the servant an opportunity to return and purify themselves. In summary, divine guidance is a continuous process that is strengthened by a person’s efforts to earn Allah’s pleasure. To recognize this guidance, one must pay attention to internal signs (peace, inclination to good, regret over sin) and external signs (ease in worship, steadfastness on the path of truth, choosing righteous companions). Allah emphasizes in the Holy Quran that He never lets the reward of good-doers be lost and that those who strive in His way, He shows them their path. Therefore, whenever you find these signs within yourself or around you, know that the hand of Allah’s help and guidance is with you, assisting you on the path of perfection and felicity. This process is dynamic and continuous, requiring constant contemplation and gratitude. Divine guidance is not a destination but an unending journey towards proximity to and knowledge of Allah.
