Gossiping is one of the major sins in Islam and is strongly condemned in the Quran and Hadith.
Gossiping is one of the actions that is strongly condemned in the Holy Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12, Allah advises the believers to avoid much suspicion, which indicates the utmost importance of human relationships and trustworthiness. Gossiping means speaking ill about someone in their absence, which can damage their reputation. Additionally, in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 60, Allah warns about the deeds that people commit, which often includes gossip. Gossip is related to lying and slander, and it can destroy relationships. Furthermore, a hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) states that gossiping is like eating the flesh of one's dead brother. This analogy emphasizes the ugliness of this act and the lack of God's satisfaction with it. Therefore, based on Quranic verses and hadiths, it can be concluded that gossiping is a major and unforgivable sin that not only negatively impacts a person's soul but also has damaging consequences on social relationships. We must remember that preserving the dignity and reputation of others is our responsibility, and we should strive to refrain from spreading rumors and negative opinions.
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother while he is dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.
And if there is a harmful potential in your livelihood, then avoid gossip.
One day, a man was at a gathering where people were gossiping about one of the attendees. He felt very upset because he knew that this act was not only ugly but could seriously harm friendships. After a while, he decided to remind his friends about the importance of being kind and respectful. He said, 'Do not spend your time talking negatively about others, as this will ruin friendships.' After that, the gathering continued in a friendly and pleasant atmosphere.
