Looking negatively at others is considered a sin in the Quran as it leads to disrespect and suspicion.
In the Holy Quran, there are various warnings regarding looking negatively at others and harboring ill thoughts about them. In Surah An-Nur, verse 30, Allah instructs believing men to lower their gaze and not to look at what is unlawful for them. This indicates that having a negative or disrespectful view of others is a form of disrespect and diminishes the value of human beings. Similarly, this directive is extended to believing women, meaning that controlling one's gaze from lustful thoughts is essential for both genders, emphasizing that disrespecting others is unacceptable. Moreover, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah warns believers not to pry into the affairs of others and to avoid gossip and slander. Thus, looking at others with negativity is considered a sin as it can lead to suspicion, gossip, and the violation of others' rights. The Quran emphasizes that believers should view each other with compassion and tolerance, refraining from any unfair judgments and isolation from one another. Therefore, looking down upon others is not only condemned in the Quran but also contributes to destroying social bonds and creating discord.
Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. And would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother while he is dead? It would be disgusting.
One day, a man was sitting in a gathering, busy judging others. He was finding a negative trait in every person he saw, thinking about who he could not tolerate. Suddenly, someone approached him and said, 'Why do you look at others this way? Allah has taught us to think well of each other and focus on the good.' The man remembered the Quranic verses and replied, 'You are right!'
