Why does sin darken the heart?

Sin darkens the heart, but with repentance and good deeds, the heart can be illuminated.

Quranic Answer

In the Holy Quran, the concept of sin and its impact on the human heart is clearly articulated. Allah states in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 7: "Allah has put a seal upon their hearts, and for them is a great punishment." This verse relates the concept of punishment to sins, indicating that sin causes individuals to stray from divine guidance and leads to a darkened heart. Similarly, in Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 63, Allah mentions that "their hearts are in oblivion, and they do not perform good deeds." This oblivion contributes to deviation from the right path, leading to more sinful actions. Sins act like impurities upon a person's heart, and the more these impurities accumulate, the darker the heart becomes. Surah Al-Imran, verse 135 indicates that "those who have committed sins and later repented, Allah will forgive them and brighten their hearts." This shows that with repentance and returning to Allah, one's heart can regain its light. Ultimately, sin negatively affects the heart and darkens it, but through repentance and righteous deeds, one can return to light and peace.

Short Story

One day, a tree was growing tall in a garden. One day, a wind blew and its fruits fell to the ground. The tree felt guilty for discarding its fruits. But soon it realized that with each sin, its heart became darker. From that day onward, it decided to gather every little and big fruit from the ground and return them to the tree. As it began to make the effort, it noticed that with each fruit returned, its heart became illuminated once more. Thus, we all can find a way back to the light.
