Why should I be careful with my tongue?

The tongue can lead to misjudgments and division; hence it should be used for speaking good words.

Quranic Answer

The tongue is one of the most important tools of human communication, and the Holy Quran emphasizes its significance in various aspects. Allah warns us in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12: "O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother while he is dead?" This verse clearly alerts us that the tongue can easily cause harm and lead to misjudgments and division among believers. Moreover, in Surah Luqman, verse 19, it is stated: "And speak to people good [words]." This indicates that we should always strive to use our tongues for speaking kind and positive words while avoiding insulting or disrespectful speech. In fact, the tongue as a powerful tool can help influence others and encourage them toward good or bad deeds. Furthermore, it is essential to know that on the Day of Judgment, our tongues will bear witness against us. Allah mentions this in Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 13: "And their tongues and their hands and their legs will testify against them of what they used to do." Therefore, we must be careful to use our tongues for spreading love, honesty, and good morals, and to avoid insults and slander. This approach not only enhances our relationships with others but also strengthens our faith and religious beliefs.

He shared a story of two friends who spoke harshly to each other and remained apart for a long time. However, after a while, they decided to make peace and realized that only with loving and constructive words can they recreate love. From that day on, they were always careful with their words.
