Arrogance distances a person from God's mercy and leads them away from truth.
Arrogance is one of the undesirable traits highlighted in the Holy Quran. In several verses, Allah warns the believers against the dangers of pride and self-importance while advising them to avoid this vice. One significant reason to avoid arrogance is that it distances individuals from God's mercy and forgiveness. In Surah Luqman, verse 18, it states: 'And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.' This verse teaches us to refrain from arrogance and haughty behavior. Arrogance not only desensitizes individuals toward others but can also lead them away from truth and reality, resulting in misguidance. Moreover, the Quran mentions that Allah is angry with the arrogant and subjects them to severe punishments. For instance, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 37, it is mentioned: 'And do not walk upon the earth exultantly; indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart].' Given these insights, avoiding arrogance not only protects us from its negative impacts but leads us toward virtuous attributes and supports us in our return to God. Ultimately, distancing ourselves from arrogance enhances moral standing and human virtues.
And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly; indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart].
One day, a proud man went to the market and mocked his surroundings, considering himself superior to all. A child, with innocence, asked, 'Aren't you human like us?' He replied, 'Of course!' The child smiled and said, 'Then no one is above you!' The man realized the depth of simplicity and truth and came to his senses.
