Why should we avoid disrespecting parents?

Disrespecting parents can weaken the relationship and blessings in life, and the Quran strongly condemns it.

Quranic Answer

In the Holy Quran, disrespecting parents is strongly condemned, and this topic is addressed in several verses. One of the most significant verses that highlight this issue is verse 23 of Surah Al-Isra, which states: 'And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age while with you, say not to them [so much as], ‘uff,’ and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.' This verse reflects the importance of respecting parents and treating them well. Disrespecting parents not only weakens the relationship between a person and their parents but can also have negative impacts on the individual's spirit and life. Additionally, in Surah Luqman, verse 14, Allah advises children not to forget to be grateful to their parents and says: 'And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents…'. Furthermore, in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 24, Allah states that love for Him and His Messenger should be more important than anything else in one's life. This indicates that respect for parents also aligns with this love. Therefore, we should honor our parents and treat them with kindness and love. Ultimately, disrespecting parents is not only a dangerous deviation but can also lead to a reduction in blessings in an individual's life.
