Do Mental Prayers Reach God?

In the Holy Quran, Almighty God introduces Himself with countless perfect attributes, among the most prominent of which are: "As-Samee'" (The All-Hearing), "Al-Aleem" (The All-Knowing), and "Al-Baseer" (The All-Seeing). These attributes do not merely refer to hearing and seeing outward and apparent matters; they unequivocally encompass the comprehension and all-encompassing knowledge of all inner, hidden affairs, and even the fleeting thoughts and inclinations of the heart and mind. God, being beyond the limitations of human senses, possesses complete and perfect awareness of everything that transpires within hearts and minds, and nothing is outside the scope of His knowledge. This means that God knows and hears not only articulated words but also all unspoken thoughts, hidden desires, unconscious fears, and heartfelt intentions. One of the most explicit and beautiful verses in this regard is Surah Qaf, verse 16, where Allah states: "And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein." This verse clearly indicates that God is aware of everything that passes through the depths of a person's soul and mind, including inner whispers, secret thoughts, and mental prayers. The phrase "نَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِ نَفْسُهُ" (We know what his soul whispers to him) precisely means knowing inner whispers and hidden thoughts, and this knowledge is absolute, requiring no verbal articulation. God's closeness, described as being "closer to him than [his] jugular vein" (habel al-wareed), is a metaphor for His complete encompassment, moment-by-moment awareness, and continuous presence, such that nothing remains hidden from Him. The word "خُفْیَةً" (khufyah) means secretly or quietly. This verse instructs us to call upon God not only with humility and earnestness but also in secrecy and privacy. This secrecy can certainly include mental prayer, where the servant communicates with their Lord solely through their heart and mind, without needing to utter words aloud. This verse explicitly permits and even encourages secret supplication, of which mental prayer is a prime example, indicating that the quality of prayer takes precedence over its quantity or public display. Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mulk, verse 13, we read: "And conceal your speech or publicize it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts." This verse clearly stresses that whether we vocalize our words or keep them hidden and confined within our hearts, God is aware of all of them, and none remain concealed from Him. The phrase "عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ" (Knowing of that within the breasts) means that God has complete and comprehensive knowledge of the thoughts, intentions, and secrets hidden within hearts and minds. This includes any whisper, thought, or mental prayer that may not even be uttered. This verse guarantees that nothing, not even the innermost desires and most hidden thoughts, is concealed from Divine knowledge, and every call, whether manifest or hidden, reaches His threshold. Understanding that mental prayers are heard has profound implications for our spiritual life. Firstly, it gives us unparalleled peace of mind that at any time and in any place, even when we are unable to articulate words (due to illness, weakness, or other limitations) or are in a gathering where we do not wish to reveal our prayers, we can speak to our God and establish a connection with Him.
