We feel God's love by contemplating His creation, adhering to His guidance, expressing gratitude, engaging in worship, serving humanity, and showing patience in adversity. These are pathways to perceiving His boundless presence and grace.
How can we truly feel the boundless love of God in our lives? This is a profound question that has captivated countless hearts throughout human history. The answer, deeply rooted in the teachings of the Holy Quran, is not merely an ephemeral emotion but a profound experience that unfolds through knowledge, righteous action, and continuous spiritual reflection. The Quran, as divine revelation, serves as our ultimate guide on this journey, clearly demonstrating how Allah Almighty showers His immense love upon His creation and how we, in turn, can perceive, understand, and intimately feel this love with our entire being. The love of Allah, unlike human affection which can be limited, conditional, and fleeting, is absolute, unconditional, all-encompassing, and eternal. As stated in the very first surah of the Quran, Surah Al-Fatihah, where Allah introduces Himself with the majestic names "Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim" (The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), these attributes signify the vastness and universality of His mercy and love. This divine compassion extends to all beings, whether they are believers or disbelievers, obedient or sinful. However, truly perceiving and deeply feeling this love in our daily lives requires us to open our hearts and cultivate inner sight, enabling us to recognize its countless manifestations all around us and within ourselves. The first and perhaps most fundamental step to feeling God's love is to deeply contemplate His magnificent creation. Everything we observe in the universe, from the minutest atom to the grandest galaxies, from the intricate order of nature to the boundless complexities of human existence, all serve as clear mirrors reflecting the inexhaustible power, infinite wisdom, and, most importantly, the boundless love of our benevolent Creator. The Holy Quran, in numerous verses, invites us with an encouraging tone to ponder and reflect upon these "Ayat" or signs. For instance, in Surah Ar-Rum, verse 21, it states: "And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought." While this specific verse speaks of love between humans, it underscores the principle of creation and the placement of love as a divine sign. When we reflect upon this impeccable order, unparalleled beauty, and flawless design, we are inevitably led to acknowledge His greatness and benevolence. This realization is the very beginning of feeling His immeasurable love. This sense of awe, reverence, and gratitude opens a portal to our hearts, making us receptive to divine grace and love. Can one truly behold such a perfect and flawless creation, with all its delicacy and complexity, and remain unaware of the boundless love of its Creator? Every breath we take, every drop of water we drink, every morsel of food we consume, and every moment of peace and security we experience—all are unconditional gifts from Him, bestowed upon us with immeasurable care and precision. Understanding this abundance of blessings is, in itself, the greatest manifestation of His love. The second crucial path is to pay deep attention to and act upon divine guidance, which has reached us through the Quran and the traditions of the Prophets. Allah Almighty did not merely create us and then abandon us; rather, through sending Prophets, revealing sacred scriptures (the pinnacle of which is the Holy Quran), and embedding clear signs in nature and within ourselves, He has shown us the right path in life, the way to ultimate success and perfection. This itself is the greatest sign of His love and concern, as He does not wish for His servants to wander lost in the darkness of ignorance and misguidance, leading to ruin. When we live according to the teachings of the Quran, act upon its commands, and refrain from what it forbids, we clearly feel the light of divine guidance illuminating our lives. This light is a living manifestation of God's love, guiding us through difficulties, bringing solace to our hearts, and illuminating our path. Following this divine guidance brings inner peace, spiritual stability, and contentment to our souls, and this sense of inner tranquility is a direct reflection of His love in our hearts. If Allah did not love us, why would He send us such invaluable and unparalleled guidance? Why would He send Prophets to teach us? These guidelines are profound indicators of His love, as He desires us to live the best possible life and achieve true happiness in both this world and the hereafter. The third immensely important factor is gratitude and appreciation for Allah's countless blessings. When we contemplate the myriad and boundless blessings Allah has bestowed upon us and are truly grateful from the depths of our being, our hearts open up to Him, and our connection with our Creator strengthens. Gratitude, as promised by Allah in Surah Ibrahim, verse 7, not only leads to an increase in blessings ("If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe") but also reinforces our bond with the original and eternal source of these blessings. It vitalizes within us the feeling of divine love, care, and grace. Every time we express thanks for health, a loving family, a blessed job, delicious food, a roof over our heads, or even a beautiful sunrise and a cool breeze, we are, in essence, recognizing His infinite love. Gratitude opens our perspective to divine favors, helping us see the abundance and boundlessness of blessings rather than focusing on perceived deficiencies. This, in itself, is the best way to feel His presence and love. Fourth, establishing a continuous and heartfelt connection with Allah through acts of worship. Prayer (Salah), supplication (Dua), remembrance (Dhikr), recitation of the Quran, and every sincere act of worship are avenues that bring us closer and closer to Allah. In these moments of profound solitude and intimate communion, one can directly feel the pinnacle of Allah's love, closeness, and responsiveness. Allah states in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 186, with an intimate and reassuring tone: "And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be rightly guided." This verse clearly demonstrates Allah's immediate closeness and prompt responsiveness, which is the epitome of His love and attention to His servants. When we pray and our prayers are answered, or even when we seek refuge in Him during moments of extreme difficulty and despair and suddenly feel peace and strength, these are all tangible manifestations of His love. Prayer truly is the ascension of the believer (Mi'raj al-Mu'min) and the best opportunity to whisper to the Creator and feel His warm presence and infinite kindness deep within our being. Fifth, extending love to others and serving God's creation selflessly. One of the most beautiful and tangible ways to experience and reflect Allah's love is by manifesting this love in our actions and behaviors towards our fellow human beings. When we show love to others, extend a hand to the needy, assist the oppressed, forgive someone's mistakes, or even bring comfort to someone with a smile and kind words, we are, in essence, walking in the path of divine love and drawing ourselves closer to its overflowing spring. Allah explicitly states in the Quran that He loves those who do good. For example, in Surah Aal-e-Imran, verse 134, it says: "And those who control their anger and pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good." When we embark on the path of love and benevolence, we feel that we ourselves are being quenched by this fountain of love, and this sense of inner peace and satisfaction is a clear indication of Allah's love for us, reflected through our actions. Sixth, patience and steadfastness in the face of trials and tribulations. Life is not devoid of challenges and hardships; this is the very nature of this world. However, our perspective on these difficulties can be transformative. If we hold a firm belief that Allah is Merciful and never desires anything but our true well-being and betterment, then even in the hardest circumstances and bitterest calamities, we can perceive hints of His love and wisdom. The Quran teaches us that divine trials are tools for spiritual growth, purification of the soul, and elevation of our faith. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155, it states: "And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient." In these tests, Allah intends to unfold our hidden potentials, strengthen our resolve, and draw us closer to Him. Enduring these difficulties with patience, trust in Allah (Tawakkul), and acceptance of His divine decree allows us to see His profound wisdom and love behind the seemingly unpleasant appearance of events. We feel that He is always watching over us and accompanying us. This feeling of unwavering care and assistance is the deepest form of understanding divine love. Seventh and finally, sincere repentance (Tawbah) and continuous return to Him. Allah is the Most Accepting of repentance and the Most Merciful. Every human being may err and commit sins throughout their life, but the boundless ocean of divine forgiveness is always open and ready to embrace His servants. In Surah Az-Zumar, verse 53, it is stated: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'" When a person returns to Allah with sincere remorse and genuine regret, they immediately feel a lightness, purity, and unparalleled serenity. This unconditional forgiveness and acceptance from Allah is an unparalleled manifestation of His love, cleansing the heart from all despair and imbuing it with renewed zest for life. The feeling of being forgiven and drawing close again after repentance is a powerful sign of Allah's infinite love and boundless compassion. Ultimately, feeling God's love is a continuous spiritual journey, not a fixed or final destination. This journey requires constant self-reflection (Muraqabah), adherence to the life-giving teachings of the Quran, and an unwavering openness of heart and soul to the countless divine blessings. The more we draw closer to Allah in our lives, the more we come to know Him, and the more we trust Him with complete faith and reliance, the more deeply and profoundly we will be able to touch His boundless and unwavering love in every moment of our lives – in every small blessing and every great trial. This love is the greatest asset of our lives, serving as the source of our salvation, happiness, and eternal bliss in both this fleeting world and the everlasting Hereafter.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'
O you who have believed, whoever of you reverts from his religion – Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He loves and who love Him, humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favor of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be rightly guided.
One day, a wealthy and perpetually anxious man, by a riverbank, observed a dervish sitting peacefully under a tree, listening to the birds' melodies, with a serene face and a calm heart. The rich man, who never found a moment's peace due to the abundance of his wealth and the constant worry of preserving it, asked the dervish with astonishment: "O Dervish, I see that you possess neither wealth nor a home, yet you seem to have a tranquility that I, with all my riches, lack. What is the secret to this inner peace?" The dervish smiled and replied: "My brother, you seek treasure in possessions, while I seek it within myself. Every breath I take, every time I drink water, and every sound that reaches my ears from this beautiful nature, I consider all of it a sign of the Lord's love and grace. I feel His love in every atom of this world and in every moment of my life. How can one who trusts in God and sees himself under the protection of His love ever be anxious? This tranquility is the fruit of trusting in One who is infinitely Merciful and never abandons His servants." Hearing the dervish's words, the rich man fell into deep contemplation. For the first time, he understood the true meaning of wealth and peace, realizing that real affection is not found in bank accounts or financial savings, but in knowing and connecting with the ultimate source of all goodness.
