Controlling the tongue requires choosing words wisely and avoiding gossip.
Controlling our speech and communicating effectively is one of the most important skills in human life. The Holy Quran emphasizes the significance of language and expression in various verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Imran, verse 186 states: 'Indeed, you will hear much hurtful speech from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah. But if you are patient and fear Allah - indeed, it is of the matters [worthy] of determination.' This highlights the importance of being cautious about what we say. Controlling our tongue means choosing our words carefully and speaking the truth, which believers must be diligent about. Furthermore, in Surah Luqman, verse 19, it mentions: 'And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boisterous.' This underscores that we should be mindful of how we communicate. Additionally, we must recognize that speaking about others, especially judging and gossiping, is dangerous. Islam heavily criticizes gossip, as mentioned in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12: 'O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.' Thus, to achieve greater control over our speech, we must speak with consideration, avoid judgment and gossiping, and remember that our words can serve as instruments of good or evil. Ultimately, praying and seeking help from Allah to control our tongue is also an effective strategy.
Indeed, you will hear many hurtful statements from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah.
And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk upon the earth exultantly.
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.
Once upon a time, there was a young man named Ahmad who pondered how he could have more control over his speech. He decided to study the verses of the Quran and learn from them. Each day, he reminded himself not to gossip about others and to choose his words carefully. After some time, he noticed that his behavior and speech changed, and he felt a greater sense of peace.
