Combat prayer lethargy by cultivating humility (khushu'), perseverance, increasing remembrance of Allah (dhikr), and seeking His help. Transform prayer into a heartfelt conversation with the Creator to experience its peace and blessings.
Experiencing lethargy or disinterest in prayer is a common struggle many Muslims face on their spiritual journey. This feeling can hinder a deep and fruitful connection with Allah, yet the Holy Quran offers clear guidance and profound spiritual principles to overcome this challenge. Prayer (Salah) is not merely a dry ritual; it is a spiritual backbone and a vital connection between the servant and their Lord, intended to be performed with full presence of heart and humility (Khushu'). To understand how to combat lethargy in prayer, we must first delve into its roots from a Quranic perspective and then explore the Quranic solutions. One of the primary reasons the Quran points to that makes prayer feel difficult and burdensome is the lack of khushu'. Allah Almighty states in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 45: "وَاسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى الْخَاشِعِينَ" meaning: "And seek help through patience and prayer. And indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]." This verse clearly indicates that prayer is perceived as a heavy burden for those who lack khushu', and this very heaviness can lead to lethargy and boredom. Khushu' is a state of humility, presence of heart, concentration, and an understanding of the greatness of Allah during prayer. True believers are those who are humbly submissive in their prayers, as we read in Surah Al-Mu'minun, verses 1 and 2: "قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ" meaning: "Certainly will the believers prosper, Those who are during their prayer humbly submissive." Thus, the core of overcoming lethargy lies in cultivating khushu'. To cultivate khushu' and overcome lethargy, the Quran offers several direct and indirect strategies: 1. Understanding and Reflecting on the Meaning of Prayer and its Verses: Often, lethargy stems from a lack of deep understanding of what we are reciting in prayer. Prayer is a conversation, not mere repetition. The Quran invites us to ponder its verses. When we comprehend the meanings of the words and verses of Surah Al-Fatiha, Al-Ikhlas, or any other Surah we recite in prayer, the prayer transforms from a habit into a living dialogue. Imagine conversing with a great king; would you be bored? In prayer, we converse with the Creator and Sustainer of the entire universe. Understanding the depth of "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest), "Alhamdulillah Rabb al-Alamin" (All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds), and "Iyyaka Na’budu wa Iyyaka Nasta’in" (You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help) can awaken the heart and enhance mental presence. 2. Seeking Help Through Patience and Steadfastness (Sabr): The aforementioned verse 45 of Surah Al-Baqarah not only refers to khushu' but also emphasizes Sabr. Sabr here means perseverance, steadfastness, and enduring difficulties on the path of worship. Overcoming lethargy does not happen overnight; it requires continuous effort and persistence. Whenever you feel bored or sluggish, strive to overcome it through perseverance and by reminding yourself of the importance of prayer. Allah says in Surah Taha, verse 132: "وَأْمُرْ أَهْلَكَ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَاصْطَبِرْ عَلَيْهَا ۖ لَا نَسْأَلُكَ رِزْقًا ۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُكَ ۗ وَالْعَاقِبَةُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ" meaning: "And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you. And [ultimate] success is for righteousness." This verse emphasizes the importance of consistency and steadfastness in prayer, even if it is difficult at first. 3. Strengthening the Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr): The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of remembering Allah. Dhikr not only includes glorification (Tasbeeh) and declaration of Allah's oneness (Tahleel) but also encompasses any heartfelt and verbal remembrance of Allah. In Surah Ar-Ra’d, verse 28, we read: "الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ" meaning: "Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured." When the heart is preoccupied with the remembrance of Allah and finds tranquility in it, entering into prayer and maintaining presence of heart becomes easier. Life filled with worldly distractions can make the heart oblivious to Allah's remembrance, and this heedlessness leads to lethargy in worship. Increasing dhikr throughout the day prepares the spiritual atmosphere for a higher quality prayer. 4. Focusing on the Benefits and Blessings of Prayer: The Quran presents prayer not just as an obligation but as an unparalleled opportunity for spiritual purification, growth, and prevention from sin. In Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 45, it states: "اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ ۖ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ" meaning: "Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing." When a person is aware of these immense blessings of prayer and views it as a refuge from worldly impurities and a path to inner peace, their motivation to perform it with presence of heart increases. Prayer is an opportunity for solitude with the Beloved and submission to the Divine will, resulting in unparalleled tranquility. 5. Seeking Help from Allah: The Quran teaches us to always seek help from Allah. In Surah Al-Fatiha, verse 5, we read: "إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ" meaning: "You Alone we worship, and You Alone we ask for help." If you feel lethargy and heaviness in prayer, sincerely ask Allah to remove this state from you and grant you khushu' and presence of heart. Supplication before prayer, during prayer, and after it can open a door to Divine assistance. Ultimately, overcoming lethargy in prayer is an evolutionary journey. It requires self-awareness, honesty with oneself, and continuous effort. By focusing on a deeper understanding of prayer's concepts, patience and steadfastness, increasing the remembrance of Allah throughout the day, and appealing to the Merciful Lord, we can transform prayer from a tiresome burden into a gushing spring of tranquility, energy, and a deep connection with the Creator of the universe. This path is a journey where every step brings us closer to Allah and illuminates our lives with the light of spirituality.
And seek help through patience and prayer. And indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].
Certainly will the believers prosper,
Those who are during their prayer humbly submissive.
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.
It is narrated that in ancient times, there was a worshipper who went to the mosque every day and performed his prayers, but sometimes, his heart was not present in this worship, and only his body prostrated. He suffered from this inner lethargy and heedlessness. One day, he went to a wise old man and confided in him about the state of his heart. The elder smiled and said: "O young man, your prayer is like a tree you plant. If its roots do not draw from the soil of certainty and the water of humility, it will bear no fruit. Let your heart be present in the Divine presence before you begin to pray. Imagine this is your last meeting with the Creator. Would your heart wander elsewhere in such a meeting?" The worshipper took heed of the elder's words. From then on, whenever he stood for prayer, he prayed with such presence of heart and humility as if it were his last prayer in life, and from then on, not only did lethargy depart from him, but prayer became his sweetest solitude.
