Quranic Answer

Why do I feel disheartened despite having faith?

Feeling disheartened or experiencing a form of spiritual apathy, sometimes referred to as 'dil-mordegi' in Persian, is a common experience, even for those who possess strong faith. The Holy Quran, while not directly using the term 'disheartened' in its modern psychological sense, extensively addresses the human spiritual condition, life's challenges, and pathways to overcome sorrow, grief, and despair. These states often arise from a combination of internal and external factors that challenge our faith, necessitating a deeper understanding of Quranic teachings to navigate them. The Quran teaches us that this world is a place of trial, and the life of a believer is replete with various tests. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155, Allah says: “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.” This verse explicitly states that trials are an inseparable part of the journey of faith. These tests can manifest as financial difficulties, loss of life, emotional distress, or even the passing of loved ones. The purpose of these trials is not punishment, but rather to elevate one's spiritual rank, purify sins, and strengthen faith. Disheartening feelings during these periods may arise due to the heavy burden of the trial or a lack of understanding of Divine wisdom. In such circumstances, the Quran advises patience and steadfastness, for Allah is with the patient, and indeed, with every hardship comes ease. This understanding—that every difficulty carries hidden wisdom—can help alleviate feelings of disheartenedness and foster a more hopeful outlook on the future. Furthermore, one of the primary sources of peace and relief from despondency is the remembrance of Allah. The Quran unequivocally states that the tranquility of hearts lies in the remembrance of God. In Surah Ar-Ra'd, verse 28, it says: “Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” Although we may possess faith, we might, in practice, neglect the remembrance of Allah, or our remembrance might only be superficial, not reaching the depths of our souls. Disheartenedness can be a sign that our hearts are deprived of their essential nourishment, which is the remembrance of Allah. Reciting the Quran with contemplation, engaging in constant remembrance (dhikr), performing prayers with attentiveness, and offering sincere supplications are all ways to fill this spiritual void and renew our faith. Forgetting the main purpose of life and becoming overly engrossed in worldly matters can also lead to despondency. The Quran repeatedly refers to the transient nature of this world and the importance of the Hereafter. Surah Al-Hadid, verse 20, states: “Know that the life of this world is only amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting among yourselves and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the disbelievers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.” If our primary concern is worldly life and its fleeting successes, and we become deeply attached to our possessions, any failure or loss can severely lead to disheartenedness. It is here that remembering the true nature of this world and focusing on eternal goals can shift our perspective and bring us profound inner peace. Moreover, sins and shortcomings can also weigh heavily on the human heart, causing spiritual dullness and despondency. Every sin, no matter how small, leaves an impact on the soul. The Quran greatly emphasizes the importance of repentance (tawbah) and seeking forgiveness (istighfar). Returning to Allah and asking for His forgiveness not only erases sins but also lifts a heavy burden from the soul, restoring freshness and vitality to the heart. Sometimes, disheartenedness stems from a lack of gratitude. When a person focuses on what they lack and neglects the countless blessings from Allah, feelings of insufficiency and dissatisfaction overwhelm them. In Surah Ibrahim, verse 7, the Quran says: “And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'” Gratitude not only increases blessings but also transforms one's outlook to be positive, freeing them from the chains of despair. In conclusion, faith serves as a shield against absolute despair, but it does not mean the complete negation of negative emotions. Rather, faith provides us with tools and strategies to confront these emotions, manage them, and overcome them. These tools include patience, prayer, Quranic recitation, remembrance of Allah, repentance, gratitude, and contemplation of Divine wisdom. These are all pillars that can preserve the believer's heart amidst life's turbulences and ultimately lead to true peace and assurance. Disheartenedness can serve as a reminder that we need to deepen our connection with Allah and turn back to Him. This in itself is an opportunity for spiritual growth and strengthening of faith. Let us remember that Allah never abandons His servants in hardships and always provides a way out, provided we hold fast to the rope of Allah, and step forward with reliance and hope.

Short Story

It is narrated that in ancient times, there was a pious and virtuous merchant who, all of a sudden, lost all his possessions to the unforeseen waves of misfortune. His heart became heavy with sorrow and grief, and he sat in a corner, sighing deeply. His friend, a wise and عارف (mystic) man, consoled him, saying: "O brother, you who have enjoyed Allah's grace and generosity for a lifetime, now that destiny has decreed this state, why do you feel so disheartened? Do you not know that this world is but a passing lane, and what truly remains is the remembrance of God and good deeds?" The merchant replied: "My friend, I have faith, but my heart cannot bear such a great loss." The wise man smiled and said: "Is it not that your soul is dearer than your wealth, and Allah has kept your soul safe and sound? Is it not that good health and peace of mind are treasures more valuable than all the world?" Upon hearing these words, the merchant came to his senses, prostrated himself, and repented for his heedlessness. He realized that even in the hardest moments, one can find true peace by remembering God and being grateful for what remains. From then on, he began a new life with a calmer heart and deeper faith, and disheartenedness never visited him again, for he had learned that whatever comes from the Beloved is good.
