How Do I Discern if My Decision Is Divine or Self-Serving (Nafsani)?

One of the profound and perennial challenges for human beings on their journey through life is discerning the true origin of their decisions and thoughts: Is this decision an inspiration from God, aligned with His pleasure, or is it a product of the whispers of the commanding self (nafs al-ammarah) and worldly desires? The Holy Quran and Islamic teachings offer precise and practical solutions for this distinction, the understanding and application of which can resolve many dilemmas and assist individuals on their path to perfection. Distinguishing between these two is not merely a rigid formula but requires self-awareness, insight, and continuous spiritual cultivation. Firstly, it is crucial to understand that the human soul (nafs) has different stages: from the 'nafs al-ammarah bi'l-su'' (the soul that incites to evil), to the 'nafs al-lawwamah' (the self-reproaching soul), and finally the 'nafs al-mutma'innah' (the tranquil soul) which has achieved peace and divine pleasure. Self-serving (nafsani) decisions often originate from the 'nafs al-ammarah'. These decisions are typically characterized by a desire for immediate and fleeting pleasures, seeking personal gain without regard for the rights of others, following whims, arrogance, envy, selfishness, and haste. Such decisions may seem appealing and attractive initially, but in the long run, they lead to anxiety, regret, and deviation from the path of truth. A decision being 'nafsani' means its primary motivator is the individual's inner desires and wants, without considering ethical and divine values. The Quran repeatedly warns humanity against following their whims, as this path can lead them astray from the straight path. Conversely, divine (Ilahi) decisions are those choices that are in harmony with the pure human فطرت (innate disposition) and the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. These decisions are often characterized by justice, benevolence, selflessness, piety (taqwa), moderation, inner contentment, and tranquility. The origin of these decisions is divine inspiration, the light of intellect ('aql), and innate guidance embedded within every human heart. A divine decision leads to spiritual growth, peace of heart, and the attainment of divine pleasure, even if it entails some hardships outwardly. The Quran states in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 29: “O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (Furqan to distinguish between right and wrong).” This verse is the most crucial principle for discerning truth from falsehood, and a divine decision from a self-serving one. Taqwa, meaning God-consciousness and piety, not only bestows deeper insight and vision upon an individual but also safeguards them against the temptations of the self and Shaytan, granting them a more accurate discernment in choosing the right path. For practical discernment, several fundamental steps are involved: Firstly, re-examine your intention: Is your primary intention behind this decision to seek Allah's pleasure and fulfill a divine duty, or is it to gain personal benefits, fame, or evade responsibility? The Quran emphasizes the importance of pure intention in all deeds. Secondly, consultation and reflection: Before making any decision, consult with people of wisdom and knowledge. The Quran in Surah Al-Imran, verse 159, instructs Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to consult with his companions: “And consult them in the matter.” This consultation, besides clarifying various aspects of the issue, helps one free oneself from the traps of self-conceit and ego. Furthermore, deep reflection on the worldly and otherworldly consequences of a decision is a vital principle of discernment. Thirdly, Istikhara and Supplication: If, after reflection, consultation, and research, you still have doubts, humbly appeal to Allah through prayer (Istikhara) or general supplication, asking Him to show you the best path. This method is a form of surrendering the matter to God and trusting in His wisdom. Fourthly, observe the peace of your heart: The most significant sign of a divine decision is the tranquility and assurance that results in your heart afterward. The Quran states: “Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Ar-Ra'd: 28). If a decision brings peace and serenity to your heart and frees you from anxiety, it is a sign that you have stepped onto the divine path. In contrast, self-serving decisions are often accompanied by apprehension, worry, and regret. Finally, it must be remembered that this process is a continuous journey, and one must constantly refine and guard their soul to be safe from its pitfalls. Adhering to divine piety, avoiding sins, constant remembrance of Allah, studying the Quran, and following the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) are among the most crucial factors that aid an individual in strengthening their discernment and moving along the divine path. The ultimate goal is to reach the 'nafs al-mutma'innah' stage, where all of a person’s decisions are in line with divine pleasure and absolute goodness. This path requires practice, self-purification, and unwavering trust in God, for He alone is the true guide of humanity, and all goodness comes from Him. By adhering to these principles, one can take firm steps towards proximity to God and lead a life with greater insight and tranquility.
