To align desires with God's will, one must adhere to divine commands, purify the self, and in doubt, seek guidance through prayer, Istikhara, and consultation, accepting God's decree with contentment.
The question of 'How do I know if my desire aligns with God's will?' is one of the most fundamental and profound concerns for any sincere believer and seeker of truth. This inquiry is, in essence, the key to attaining inner peace, true success, and profound contentment in both this world and the hereafter. In Islamic and Quranic teachings, the path to achieving this alignment is not a simple formula but a comprehensive spiritual and practical process that demands deep understanding, continuous effort, and sincere reliance on God (Tawakkul). God's will is a manifestation of His infinite wisdom and absolute knowledge, always encompassing what is ultimately good and beneficial for His servants, even if, from our limited perspective, it may seem contrary to our immediate and transient desires. This fundamental understanding forms the basis of our interaction with our desires and how we align them with the Divine will, as Allah is the Absolute Good and All-Knowing of every dimension of existence, and all that He decrees for us stems from His boundless grace and wisdom, even if our immediate understanding fails to grasp it. To discern whether our desires align with the Divine will, we must first comprehend what God's will fundamentally entails. The Divine will can be identified through several primary dimensions: 1. Divine Commands and Prohibitions (Sharia): The most direct and clear way to understand God's will is by adhering to the verses of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah (teachings and practices) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Everything that Allah has commanded and forbidden clearly indicates His will for humanity's well-being, success, and salvation. Therefore, any desire that contradicts the lofty Islamic laws and values—such as justice, honesty, kindness, benevolence towards parents, avoiding oppression, usury, lying, and backbiting—is certainly not in alignment with the Divine will, and may even lead one astray from the straight path. Conversely, if an individual pursues a desire that brings them closer to fulfilling their religious obligations, helps them abandon prohibitions, or contributes to strengthening moral virtues, they are indeed walking on the path of God's will. This principle applies to all aspects of life, from ethical and spiritual matters to financial, social, and personal decisions. For instance, earning a lawful livelihood, helping the needy with pure intentions, striving to establish peace and reconciliation among people, and abstaining from any form of financial or moral corruption are clear examples of desires that are in harmony with the Divine will and bring about the Lord's pleasure. 2. Spiritual Purification and Growth (Tazkiyah): Allah desires for His servants to achieve purity of soul and profound spiritual growth and elevation. This is the ultimate purpose of human creation. Therefore, any desire that brings a person closer to God, strengthens their faith, beautifies their character, and leads them towards self-improvement and perfection (Tazkiyah) is in alignment with God's will. This includes the inclination to acquire beneficial knowledge (especially religious knowledge that increases insight), abstaining from sins and errors, strengthening Taqwa (God-consciousness and piety in all aspects of life), and striving to improve human relationships and serve creation. The Holy Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of Tazkiyah and the irreplaceable status of Taqwa, making it a criterion for human superiority over one another. Taqwa grants an individual profound insight to distinguish right from wrong in the complexities of life, enabling them to regulate their desires by the light of Divine guidance. 3. Supplication (Dua) and Seeking Guidance (Istikhara): One of the most powerful and effective tools for aligning desires with the Divine will is through constant supplication and sincere reliance on God. When a person faces significant choices and decisions in life and finds the path unclear, they can seek Allah's help with a humble heart, a submissive spirit, and a pure intention. The prayer of Istikhara is a recognized and recommended method in Islam that assists individuals in seeking divine guidance during uncertainty and confusion. The concept of Istikhara is not about receiving a direct 'yes' or 'no' answer from God, or seeing a clear sign in a dream; rather, Allah facilitates the path for what is good and beneficial for you, or places obstacles if it is not. In other words, after performing Istikhara with its proper etiquette, if the matter proceeds with ease, openness, and inner tranquility, it is a sign of Divine approval and benefit. Conversely, if one encounters difficulties, obstacles, and inner apprehension, it may indicate that the matter is not beneficial. However, this does not mean every difficulty signals a lack of God's will; rather, it is observed in conjunction with sincere effort, thorough research, and consultation with wise individuals. 4. Contemplation of the Universe (Ayat al-Afaqi) and the Self (Ayat al-Anfusi): The universe is a grand book in which Divine signs and manifestations are evident. Contemplation of the creation of the heavens and the earth, the intricate natural order, the destinies of past nations, and even the events and occurrences in individual and social life can help a person understand the Divine wisdom behind all happenings and events. Furthermore, knowing oneself and the true needs of the soul leads individuals towards desires that are in harmony with their pure, innate (Fitra) nature, which itself is aligned with God's will as it is embedded deep within human existence. Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 216 beautifully articulates this point: "But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not." This verse provides a profound lesson in submission to Divine wisdom, accepting what is decreed, and trusting in God's absolute knowledge, even if it goes against our apparent and limited desires. 5. Consultation with the Wise and Experienced (Shura): Although God's will is primarily known through revelation, prayer, and heartfelt connection, Allah has also granted humanity intellect and the ability to consult. Seeking advice from pious, knowledgeable, and experienced individuals who adhere to religious principles and values can help clarify various aspects of a decision, uncover its hidden dimensions, and ultimately determine its alignment with Islamic and rational standards, as well as the public good. This consultation complements Dua and Tawakkul; it does not replace them, and it can help harmonize the practical and social dimensions of our desires with the Divine will. 6. Acceptance and Reliance (Sabr and Shukr): After all efforts, supplications, and consultations, whatever transpires and ultimately results is God's will and decree. If a desire is fulfilled, showing abundant gratitude and thanks to Allah, and if it is not fulfilled, exercising beautiful patience (Sabr Jamil) and inner contentment with God's decree (Rida bi al-Qada) are indicators of a heart truly aligned with the Divine will. This is where Tawakkul manifests its true meaning: surrendering the outcome to God with complete confidence in His wisdom and mercy. Whoever sincerely relies upon Allah, He is sufficient for them, and He will provide a way out from where they do not expect, as stated in Surah At-Talaq, verses 2 and 3. Ultimately, aligning personal desires with the Divine will is a dynamic, continuous process that requires constant self-awareness and spiritual vigilance. It demands deep self-knowledge, spiritual insight, practical piety, and obedience to God's commands in all moments of life. The closer a person draws to God, the more illuminated their heart becomes, and their ability to discern what is truly beneficial and absolute good increases. Reaching this stage means, in the true sense, finding eternal peace and absolute success, because one is then walking on the path that their Creator has ordained for them and is pleased with. This path not only leads to Divine pleasure but also brings prosperity in both this world and the hereafter.
Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.
And when they have fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms. And take two just men from among you as witnesses and establish the testimony for Allah. That is instructed to whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out
and will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
It is narrated that in ancient times, a pious dervish would go to the market every day for his lawful sustenance, content with only what God had destined for him. One day, he wished, 'If only I had great wealth, I could build mosques and help the poor.' That night, he dreamt that an angel told him: 'Your desire is noble, but do you know God's will? God's will is for your heart to always remember Him, not to accumulate worldly possessions. Sometimes what you desire, if granted, would lead you astray from the true path, and what you flee from holds your true good.' The dervish woke up and pondered how God hides good and wisdom behind the unfulfillment of material desires. He concluded that true peace lies in submitting to divine decree and striving to earn His pleasure, not in every wish of the mind coming true. He realized that his desires must be in line with the Lord's will: purity of intention, service to creation, and piety. From then on, instead of wishing for wealth, he wished for insight, so he could always prioritize God's will over his own, and remain content and grateful in all circumstances.
