How to cope with despair according to the teachings of the Quran?

By relying on God, making prayers, and recalling blessings, one can cope with despair.

Quranic Answer

In the Holy Quran, various methods are presented to cope with despair, helping us to maintain hope even in the most challenging situations. One of the fundamental principles in this regard is reliance on God. In Surah Al-Imran, verse 159, it is stated: 'And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah.' This verse reminds us that by placing our trust in Allah and entrusting our affairs to Him, we can overcome despair. Additionally, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286, it is mentioned: 'Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.' This principle can be directly applied in confronting despair as it reminds us that Allah assigns tasks to us that are within our capacity and that we can achieve them. Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the power of prayer and worship as a means to strengthen our spirit. Surah Al-Ghafir, verse 60, states: 'And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.' Hence, prayer serves as a way to connect with God and gain renewed hope. Ultimately, reminding ourselves of God's blessings and reflecting on them is also crucial in combating despair. Allah says in Surah An-Nahl, verse 18: 'And if you should count the blessings of Allah, you could not enumerate them.' Therefore, contemplating blessings and expressing gratitude plays a key role in preventing despair.
