The Quran emphasizes the importance of controlling the tongue and warns against mockery and lies.
The Holy Quran has clear verses regarding the tongue and its control. The human tongue is a powerful tool that can have both positive and negative impacts on one's life and the lives of others. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11, Allah says: "O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them." This verse reminds us to be careful of the words we speak and to avoid mocking or belittling others. Additionally, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 83, Allah instructs the Children of Israel to use their tongues to speak the truth and engage in righteousness, steering clear of lies and slander. This indicates that the improper use of speech can have severe consequences and negatively affect social relations. Furthermore, in Surah Aal-e-Imran, verse 186, it states: "Certainly, you will be tested by your tongues." Therefore, gathering the right words and controlling one’s speech is a fundamental teaching of the Quran. In Islam, the tongue should be a medium for goodness, honesty, and the enhancement of human relationships. Overall, the Quran emphasizes the importance of controlling the tongue and urges us to refrain from speaking meaningless or harmful words.
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them.
And [mention] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents, good treatment.'
Surely, you will be tested by your tongues.
Once upon a time, one of the friends brought a drink and said that it was the best drink in the world. The other friends began to ridicule him, saying, 'Who cares about this drink?' Suddenly, everyone remembered the Quranic verses and decided to respect one another and think carefully about their use of language from then on.
